Embellish the shape of the ears

Patients with loosened ears are often the victims of comments and taunts from their peers. Children and adults with loosened ears may suffer from a lack of confidence and experience a certain physical discomfort.

Dr. Gagnon suggests that you correct your ears with otoplasty. This procedure helps to improve their appearance and positioning, bring the ears closer to the head, reduce their size, improve their shape, and recreate the natural folds of the cartilage, if necessary.

Ear surgery or otoplasty can be performed starting from the age of seven and can effectively reposition the ears without experiencing trauma.

Otoplasty corrects loosened ears and other malformations that may be associated with them. It aims to obtain a definite, symmetrical, and natural reattachment of the ears.

Ear surgery corrects:

  • A defect in the pinna which causes a lack of relief because the ear is not folded enough on itself.
  • A too large size of the conch, which accentuates the distance of the ear from the head.
  • A defect in the angle between the ear and the skull, which creates an impression of being detached.

As Dr. Alain Gagnon notes, otoplasty is one of the few cosmetic procedures that can be performed in children as young as seven years old, but it is still very common in adults. It is most often performed on both ears at the same time, but it can also be performed on only one ear.

Different techniques of otoplasty

Otoplasty is an intervention technique used to reshape and/or resize the ears, so they are proportional and in harmony with the rest of the face. Likewise, some earlobes that are too long or torn may require surgical corrections.

Many techniques exist, but the priority is to obtain a final result that is natural, free from distortions or creases that are sometimes seen. It is also necessary to often practice this technique to avoid recurrence, reconstitution of the initial deformation or the emergence of a new one.

Procedure

Otoplasty can be performed on both ears and on only one, in case of asymmetry.

  1. The surgeon makes an incision in the natural crease behind the ear.
  2. The skin is then peeled off to access the cartilage. It is then reshaped, either by fragilizing it with a small curved rasp that conforms to the shape of the ears, or by placing non-absorbable stitches, or by using a combination of both techniques.
  3. Depending what must be treated, the surgeon will:
  • Reshape the cartilage in order to redraw the normal reliefs or remove part of the overdeveloped cartilages.
  • Fold the upper part of the ear (the antihelix) and bury the hollow part of the ear (the conch).
  • Remove the excess skin strip to prevent the creation of a bulge. The incision is then stitched with an absorbable suture.
  • At the end of the surgery, the surgeon puts on a bandage.

The results

Otoplasty recreates the natural folds of the ear, repositions the pinna against the skull and corrects the shape of the lobes.

The result is apparent the day after the surgery, but it is definite after three to six months. A touch-up is sometimes necessary in case of small imperfections such as:

  • Slight asymmetries can be seen or remain in the positioning of the pinna in the folds of the cartilage and the reliefs.
  • Threads may be noticeable and scars, pinkish at first, may not progress as expected.

These little flaws are however discreet and do not catch the eye.
