Dressings, swelling, tenderness and protection from pressure can affect sleep, school, work and physical activity.

The exact instructions depend on the technique and the patient. A general recovery guide can explain the issues to anticipate, but it cannot replace the plan provided by the surgical team.

Dressings help protect the early correction

A dressing may be placed around the ears after surgery to support the new contour and protect the incisions.

Later, a softer headband may be recommended for selected periods. The type of support and how long it is worn vary, so patients should not substitute a tight sports headband or adjust the dressing without guidance.

The dressing should feel secure, but increasing pressure, severe pain or another concerning change needs to be reported.

Children may require extra supervision to avoid pulling at the dressing while asleep or at play.

Swelling can make the ears look uneven

Early swelling and bruising do not always occur equally on both sides.

One ear may appear more prominent, more folded or differently positioned while tissues are swollen. The contours can continue to soften and settle after the initial dressing is removed.

This is not the stage at which to judge fine symmetry. Photographs taken immediately after surgery do not predict the mature result.

Patients should still contact the team if one side suddenly becomes much more swollen, tense or painful, because a rapid change is different from ordinary gradual swelling.

Sleeping requires attention to pressure

Many people naturally roll onto one side during sleep, which can place pressure on a healing ear.

The surgical team may recommend a particular sleeping position or support strategy during early recovery. Planning pillows and the sleeping area before surgery can make those instructions easier to follow.

Travel pillows, improvised padding and other online suggestions should not be used in a way that compresses the ears. The safest arrangement is the one approved for the actual dressing and operation.

For a child, a parent or caregiver may need to help monitor positioning.

The scar is concealed, not absent

Otoplasty incisions are often positioned in the crease behind the ear. Some corrections may use an incision within a natural fold on the front.

These locations can make scars less conspicuous, but they remain surgical scars. Early redness or firmness may change as healing continues, and individual scar behaviour varies.

Internal sutures can sometimes be felt beneath the skin. Persistent tenderness, drainage or a suture that appears to be emerging should be assessed rather than treated at home.

No technique can guarantee an invisible scar or perfectly matched ears.

Returning to school is not the same as returning to sports

A child may feel comfortable doing quiet classroom activities before the ears are ready for running, contact play or situations where another child could accidentally pull them.

Adults face similar distinctions. Desk work is different from a job requiring a helmet, headset, protective mask or repeated contact around the ears.

The return plan should therefore be based on the actual activity, not only the number of days since surgery.

Coaches, teachers or workplace supervisors may need simple instructions about temporary restrictions without being given private medical details that are not necessary.

Glasses, headphones and helmets deserve discussion

Items that rest behind or over the ears can rub an incision or place pressure on reshaped cartilage.

Patients who depend on glasses should raise this before surgery so that practical options can be discussed. The same applies to hearing devices, work headsets, gaming headphones and sports helmets.

Do not assume that an item is safe merely because it feels light. Repeated contact can matter during early healing.

Cartilage and sensation take time to settle

The ears may temporarily feel firm, numb, sensitive or unfamiliar.

Sensation and flexibility can evolve as swelling decreases and tissues heal. The final contour is not necessarily apparent when ordinary activities first resume.

Otoplasty can improve position and shape, but it cannot eliminate every difference between the ears. Cartilage can also change or partially recur, and a secondary procedure is occasionally considered.

Realistic expectations include both the visible improvement and the possibility of residual asymmetry.

When should the surgical team be contacted?

Patients should receive specific instructions for urgent and routine questions.

Increasing one-sided swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, worsening pain, fever, spreading redness, drainage, skin colour change or a displaced dressing should prompt contact as directed by the team.

It is better to ask about a concerning change than to remove a dressing or apply an unapproved product.

Otoplasty recovery in Longueuil

Dr Alain Gagnon provides individualized otoplasty instructions and follow-up for children and adults treated in Longueuil.

Planning should account for sleep, school, work, glasses, sports and any equipment that touches the ears.

<div
