Visible inner labia are not automatically abnormal, and there is no single measurement that determines whether surgery is necessary.

Some adults nevertheless experience persistent irritation, pulling or discomfort related to the labia. Others are considering a change primarily because of appearance. Labiaplasty may be discussed in either context, but the consultation should begin with anatomy, symptoms and personal motivation rather than an idealized image.

Normal vulvar anatomy has a broad range

Online photographs, advertising and carefully selected images can create a very narrow impression of what external genital anatomy is supposed to look like.

In reality, one labium may be longer than the other, the inner labia may extend beyond the outer labia and colour can differ across the same area. Puberty, pregnancy, childbirth, ageing and hormonal changes may also affect appearance.

Variation alone is not a disease. Surgery should not be presented as a requirement simply because tissue is visible or asymmetrical.

A respectful consultation makes room for reassurance as well as treatment options.

What does labiaplasty change?

Labiaplasty most often refers to surgery that reduces or reshapes the labia minora. In some situations, another part of the external genital anatomy may also be relevant, but that should be named and discussed separately rather than grouped under a vague promise of “rejuvenation.”

The operation can reduce tissue that repeatedly pulls, twists or rubs during exercise, cycling, sexual activity or while wearing certain clothing. It can also change the visible edge or asymmetry of the labia when appearance is the patient’s principal concern.

The amount and location of tissue matter. Removing as much as possible is not the goal because the labia have protective and sensory functions.

Symptoms need an appropriate evaluation

Discomfort in the vulvar area is not always caused by labial size.

Skin conditions, infection, pelvic-floor problems, hormonal changes, vulvodynia and other causes can produce burning, irritation or pain. Pain during intercourse can also have multiple physical and psychological contributors.

Labiaplasty cannot be expected to resolve a symptom that originates elsewhere. A gynecologic or other medical assessment may be appropriate when the history or examination suggests another condition.

The consultation should identify when symptoms occur, whether they are localized to a specific fold of tissue and what non-surgical measures have already been tried.

What labiaplasty does not do

Labiaplasty is not the same as surgery involving the vaginal canal or pelvic floor.

It does not treat vaginal prolapse, urinary incontinence or pelvic-floor weakness. It does not reliably “tighten” the vagina, and it should not be marketed as a guaranteed way to increase libido, orgasm or sexual satisfaction.

It also cannot create perfect symmetry or reproduce another person’s anatomy. Healing, scarring and the way the tissue edge settles differ between patients.

Clarifying these limits is particularly important because the term “female genital cosmetic surgery” is sometimes used for several unrelated procedures.

Technique depends on where the concern is located

Different labiaplasty techniques remove or rearrange tissue in different patterns.

A technique that reduces tissue along the edge creates a different scar and contour from one that removes a wedge-shaped segment while preserving more of the original border. Neither approach is automatically preferable for every anatomy.

The distribution of tissue, asymmetry, pigmentation along the edge, previous scarring and the amount of reduction requested can all affect planning.

The specific method should be discussed after examination rather than promised from a standard description online.

Scars and sensation are part of informed consent

Genital tissue often has a strong blood supply, but labiaplasty is still surgery.

Possible complications include bleeding, infection, wound separation, persistent pain, noticeable or tender scarring, asymmetry, altered sensation and discomfort with sexual activity. Too much tissue removal can create functional and aesthetic problems that are difficult to reverse.

Temporary swelling can make the early appearance difficult to judge. The final contour should not be evaluated while tissues are still in the initial phases of healing.

No operation can guarantee a particular sensory or sexual outcome.

The decision should be private and voluntary

A partner’s preference, criticism or pressure is not an appropriate basis for intimate surgery.

The patient should be able to describe the concern in their own words, understand alternatives and decline surgery without coercion. Expectations shaped by explicit media or digitally altered images deserve careful discussion.

Confidentiality and non-judgmental communication are essential. If anxiety about appearance is severe or disproportionate, addressing that distress may be more helpful than immediately scheduling an operation.

Labiaplasty consultation in Longueuil

Dr Alain Gagnon offers private labiaplasty consultations in Longueuil for adults from Montréal’s South Shore and surrounding communities.

The consultation can distinguish normal variation from a symptom requiring further assessment and explain what surgery may change, where scars may lie and which risks and limitations apply.

If you are considering labiaplasty for discomfort or a personal aesthetic concern, request a confidential consultation to discuss the decision without pressure.

(514) 768-7906
550 chemin Chambly, Bureau 330, Longueuil, QC, J4H 3L8

Learn what labiaplasty can and cannot change, why normal anatomy varies and which symptoms, risks and expectations belong in a consultation.

[11

post-11011","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized

What Can Labiaplasty Address?
